, will feature new subcommittee content with greater emphasis on optical network applications from core to broadband and access networks, covering FTTx (PON and WDM-PON) network solutions.
In recent decades communications has moved from a laboratory curiosity to the technology of choice for all high-rate communications; it has steadily spread from the core (where it now totally dominates) towards the user, with millions of fibre lines now in the access sections of the network. Fibre optics has driven the internet revolution and is set to drive it further! ‘Real’ broadband (100MBit/s plus) will revolutionize the world as much as the internet already has and perhaps be the final spur for the elusive fibre-to-the-home roll-out. Just how many minutes will you wait to download the latest movie? ECOC, famed for its unparalleled coverage of the latest science and advanced technology, is the place to come to find out how it will be done in the future !
ECOC emphasises high technical quality in all its presentations through a rigorous screening process undertaken by an extensive panel of international experts. As for previous years, we expect to attract papers from all over Europe, Japan, the US and many other countries (almost 500 from all round the world last year); this is where the world meets to catch up on the latest developments in the area.
The conference is expected to attract more than 1500 delegates from around 35 countries, and provide a platform for top-flight scientists in the optical communications field during the four days of the conference. In addition, the ECOC exhibition, run in parallel to the conference, will cover a wide range of optical communication products and services, and is expected to attract at least 300 exhibitors with more than 4000 sqm floor space and an expected attendance of some 3000 visitors.
This year, the Conference schedule will take in short courses (to top up your knowledge on hot topics); workshops; Symposia describing the latest developments ; a series of Tutorials; special CLEO sessions and of course, oral & poster parallel sessions including both invited and contributed papers.
And that’s not counting the get-togethers that help make an event the Event ! ! This year’s social programme, with its Welcome reception located on an outdoor terrace and Gala dinner served in a château, both overlooking the Mediterranean, promises to reflect all the warmth and glamour of the French Riviera in September …
One of ECOC 2006’s chief ambitions is to achieve the greatest integration yet between the conference and exhibition events, with a higher than ever degree of interactivity providing all attendees with a broad coverage of all Optical Communications activities from first steps in innovation to real network deployments.
ECOC is this year coming to Cannes which, both as an international crossroads and glamorous seaside resort, is the perfect destination for this ECOC event. Its prestigious Palais des Festivals, also known for its red carpet treatment of film stars during its annual hosting of the internationally renowned film festival, will provide an attractive and well-equipped conference venue with plenty of sunshine in September !
We look forward to extending a warm welcome to you in Cannes.
